The national church via the 30k project have put together some best practice support and guidance when recruiting and line managing paid ministers, including:
- Recruiting well guide
- Line management toolkit
- Good practice charter
There is a national shortage of people to fill these roles, for a number of different reasons, but some have left ministry altogether because of a lack of adequate support, resulting in burnout. With high expectations placed on both clergy and younger generations ministers in general, these resources offer the tools to support both to navigate ministering together well.
We call them ‘ministers’ rather than ‘workers’ because they have an identified ministry call on their life and should be valued in that capacity. We are keen that no one gets burnt out in their role and everyone has the support needed to fulfil their vocation.
In order to best support paid younger generations ministers, we suggest the following guidelines as best practice:
- Membership to the 360 community through SWYM Opportunities and time to train and learn to further develop their ministry
- Opportunities on occasion to both be in church without a role and to visit other churches in order to inform their practice
- An annual opportunity for a spiritual retreat
- Reasonable terms and conditions within an employment contract
