Jersey Deanery formally joins Salisbury Diocese

At the Court in Windsor on 19th day of July 2022, the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty in Council approved the attachment of the Deanery of Jersey to the Diocese of Salisbury together with the revised 2022 Canons of the Church of England, which are ordered to be registered and published in the Island and observed accordingly.

The two Orders in Council were registered by the Royal Court in Jersey on Friday 2 September and the Deanery of Jersey is therefore now legally attached to the Diocese of Salisbury with the 2022 Canons of the Church of England in Jersey coming into effect in 28 days’ time.

A service to celebrate the new relationship between the Deaneries of Guernsey and Jersey and the Diocese of Salisbury will take place on Thursday 17 November at 5.30pm in Salisbury Cathedral, during which the Deans of the respective Islands will be made Canons of the Cathedral. Members of the public from the Island communities and mainland will be welcome to attend.

The Bishop of Salisbury, The Rt Revd Stephen Lake, said:

“I am delighted that the Deanery of Jersey is now legally attached to Salisbury and part of the family of the Diocese. We have, of course, been working closely together in in the day to day life of the Church since last October but I am now looking forward to my first official visit to the Island, meeting people from all walks of life, together with the Island authorities, as well as working in partnership with the Dean and the wider Church. We also look forward to Guernsey completing its work and the Order in Council being approved for its transfer this Autumn”.

The Dean of Jersey, The Very Revd Mike Keirle, said:

“This has been a long journey for us all and it was very gratifying to be present as the Order in Council was registered in the Royal Court. We look forward to welcoming Bishop Stephen to the Island in due course and developing our friendship further with the wider Diocese. On behalf of the Deanery of Jersey, I would like to thank all those involved in this process, as well as the Dioceses of Winchester and Canterbury for their pastoral care and support over the years”.
