Wilts Archdeaconry Day ‘encouraging and uplifting’
Last, but by no means least, the Wilts Archdeaconry Day was held on Saturday 12 November at Market Lavington Community Hall.
Over a hundred people were welcomed from across the diocese to witness Archdeacon Sue Groom interview Bishop Stephen about his first four months in office.
Our new diocesan bishop assured us that the profile produced by the diocese for the appointments process was accurate and helpful. Bishop Stephen spoke about how he is enjoying getting to know us and keen to get us thinking together about a diocesan vision and strategy that all can engage with. He told us about what he has learnt from listening to young people in the military and in our schools about their lives and hopes for the church.
He explained why the Beatitudes have become key to this thinking – they demonstrate that Jesus had a plan. He reflected on his first sermon in the cathedral about talents and seeking the kingdom here and now.
There was a brief time for questions and answers before a coffee break. Then those assembled were asked to discuss in groups the challenges and opportunities they face; to identify the top five priorities for the diocese; how these would demonstrate the kingdom of God; and what we would like to be talking about in three years time, and what we would prefer not to be talking about. There was a wonderful buzz around the room as these issues were discussed at length.
This was followed by feedback in plenary with responses from +Stephen before he blessed us and sent us out with the instruction to enjoy the glorious sunshine. The notes from each group were collected and will be recorded and incorporated into diocesan thinking about vision and strategy. Those who attended the day found it an excellent way to meet their new bishop and reported being both encouraged and uplifted.
