Last month, nine members of All Saints Church in Swanage put on their walking boots and set out to raise funds for the work of the Mission Aviation Fellows (MAF) by participating in their 'Time in Their Shoes' campaign.
MAF are the world's largest humanitarian airline who, for over 75 years, have been flying light aircraft in more than 25 countries to bring aid to remote places. Every six minutes one of their aircraft takes off or lands in one of the many countries they serve, bringing with them basic medical aid, the word of God, and other necessities.
The 'Time in Their Shoes' campaign gives people the chance to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. The campaign raises money for those who have little or nothing. In developing countries, many people need to walk many miles for basic necessities such as clean water and medical facilities.
Roger Arnett, the organiser of All Saints Church's 'Time in Their Shoes' and former Peak District Ranger, proposed a five-mile-long walk across Studland Heath whilst asking for a small donation of £5 from each participant.
He said: "If 20 people joined we would have raised £100, enough money to fund a medical emergency flight by MAF. As it happened though, only nine people from All Saints joined - but many others contributed and we ended up raising £200 which was gratefully received by MAF."
The team of nine All Saint's ramblers enjoyed their time on the heath but kept the harsh reality in mind that for some this would be daily trek for survival. After each mile, the group spent some time reflecting on these facts and praying for different aspects of living in a remote community.
Roger added: "For several years I have promoted MAF by attending a variety of churches, linked groups and independent groups across South Dorset, giving illustrated talks on the matter at hand. I have always been impressed by the positive response that I've received."
£100 can fund a 50-minute medical emergency flight, while £250 is enough to fund a two-hour medical emergency flight that saves up to 2-days journeying by road or boat.
