Opening the Ark

The Ark at St Mark's Church in Salisbury was officially opened on 28 July, to be a symbol of hope for the community.

During the first lockdown, when all the rainbows began appearing across the country, members of the church wanted to share the original meaning of the rainbow and the hope it represents by building an Ark to go with the rainbows. Permission was sought, which included answering the question of whether the area was liable to flooding - and thankfully, they were able to go ahead.

Through faith the project was completed. The Ark was opened by David the Woodman who had provided the wood in return for a donation to the local charity Alabaré, and Rod who represented The Salisbury Men's Shed who helped build it.

Members of the church and the community were joined by Tom Corbin, the Mayor of Salisbury,  John Glen the local MP, and then by Mr Noah and his family! In addition, thanks to "Two Bird Experiences" there was a red-tailed buzzard named "Ruby" and an American kestrel named "Merula" to represent the Dove and Raven. The Ark Exhibition shows the journey of the Ark, and the designs created by the artist at The Men's Shed and local school children. It also includes a letter from Sir David Attenborough sending his regrets that he could not be there.

The Ark Exhibition remains open and can be viewed on Saturdays between 11am and 1pm over the summer.  All are welcome to visit.

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:23
