Sudan's Day - celebrating 50 years of friendship

This year our diocese will be celebrating half a century of partnership with the Episcopal Churches of Sudan and South Sudan. The diocese looks forwards to many more years of friendship.

As a continuation of this, the link will once again be hosting an annual Sudan Day in 2023 to provide updates on the current development, political and security initiatives in Sudan and South Sudan as we continue to strengthen bonds.

The day’s talks will begin at 10 am at St. Francis’ Church, Salisbury on 18 March. Attendance for the event is free, but the Sudan-Link event organisers ask that you send them an email at sudan.secretary@salisbury.anglican.org to confirm your attendance – with any donations being gratefully accepted on the day.

Speakers at the event are set to include the Bishop of Salisbury, the Bishop of Ramsbury, the UK’s Special Representative to the Sudans, and a representative from the South Sudan Embassy, to discuss major updates on the progress in our Medical Link.

Last year’s event coincided with the Lambeth Conference when Anglican Bishops from across the world gathered together in Canterbury, providing a unique opportunity to host 50 Sudanese and South Sudanese bishops and their wives in parishes across Dorset and Wiltshire. Many friendships were formed and many more were renewed as the opportunity to share in each other’s lives reawakened many already established links in the Sudans.

While the main focus of the Sudan Link remains on education and health, the diocese continues to work with many leaders in their church – particularly in South Sudan – with the purpose of developing peace at the heart of every community during continued turbulent times for the Sudanese people.

Beyond the annual Sudan Day, the Sudans Committee meets four times a year at Sarum College to discuss a wide variety of topics relating to the dioceses work in that area. If you’d like to get involved with the committee and provide support in a range of areas such as communications or co-ordinating Deanery links, feel free to email Revd Canon Ian Woodward at revianw@btinternet.com for more information.
