Earlier this month, Pitton C of E Primary School received national recognition on 'The One Show' for their work to protect the environment and become an eco-friendly school.
The primary school was chosen to be featured on the show as part of their coverage of the COP 27 Climate Change Conference, with filming taking place in October showcasing the school's work to protect the environment in and around the school grounds.
The work started when passionate staff and pupils joined together to create the school's Eco Team, a club that gathered together to discuss and plan issues and events that can help to make their local area more eco-friendly. The students also created a dedicated Eco Team page on the school's website where they share their current priorities and highlight events they are working on.
As part of their work, the school's Eco Team has also recently been working with Surfers Against Sewage, a grassroots charity that's dedicated to protecting the ocean and ridding communities of excess plastics. With their help, the staff and students managed to become Plastic Free Schools accredited, meaning they no longer use any form of single-use plastics!
With the broadcast of their episode of 'The One Show' on the 7 November, everyone's hard work had clearly paid off. They were highlighted as pioneers of how schools and pupils are passionate about looking after the planet and served as inspiration for us all to make a commitment and do our part to help stop Climate Change.
The staff, pupils and parents have worked hard over the past few months to ensure that systems and procedures are in place to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and the children are always striving to grow and challenge the school community to do more to preserve and protect the environment.
