Chaplaincy to Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community

The chaplaincy to the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community is one of only two funded posts for this community in the Church of England. The Diocese of Salisbury is committed to supporting members of the community, who face high levels of racism and discrimination. The chaplain, Rev Canon Jonathan Herbert, can be contacted here to find out more about the work of the chaplaincy.

We are pleased to work closely with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Friendly Churches in encouraging our churches to provide sanctuary spaces for members of the community. The Archbishop of York is patron of the organisation and the Archbishop of Canterbury visited one of its friendly churches, the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rossmore,  Poole during his mission weekend. We also work closely with Dorset based organisation Kushi Bok, a charity which supports Gypsy, Roma and Traveller peoples and celebrates their culture. It organises the annual commemoration of the Gypsy Holocaust on 2 August each year, supported by Rev Jonathan Herbert.
